Gregory of Nazianzus: poet of networks
4-5 September | Faculty of Classics and Trinity College, University of Cambridge
This workshop will centre Gregory’s poetry to ask how literary connectivity relates to sociocultural engagement. We are especially interested in exploring Gregory’s poems as a window on dynamics of interaction between literary intertextuality and the construction of social networks. This will be an in-person event. Please register by 31 July at the link here.

#CfP - The Euchologion beyond Byzantium: Priestly Prayers and Peoples’ Concerns in the Christian East
27-29 November 2025 | Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna
Vienna Euchologia Project is hosting a three-day conference to explore "occasional prayers" in medieval and early modern liturgical traditions beyond Greek. These prayers, found in prayer books (euchologia), address specific needs of individuals and communities but are often understudied in non-Greek traditions.
We invite 20-minute paper abstracts (maximum 300 words in English) on themes including:
Structural comparisons of prayer book types across various ritual traditions and linguistic groups (e.g., Arabic, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian, Hungarian, Romanian, Ruthenian, Slavonic, Syriac).
Transmission of occasional prayers in manuscripts and early print.
Translation and transmission of Byzantine rite prayers into other rites.
Translation of Chalcedonian milieu prayers from Greek to other languages.
Reception of prayers from other traditions into the Byzantine rite.
Interaction between prayers in different rites of the same linguistic group.
Please send your abstracts to Georgi Mitov at georgi.mitov@oeaw.ac.at by July 31. Accepted papers may receive pre-paid accommodation (2-4 nights) and travel expense reimbursement (up to €400 within Europe, €1200 from overseas).
#CfP - XIII International symposium on Byzantine and Medieval studies “Days of Justinian I”. Special Thematic Strand: ‘Networks’
31 October-2 November | Skopje
The Institute of National History, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, and the University of Bologna, in partnership with the Faculty of Theology "St. Clement of Ohrid" in Skopje, are organizing an annual interdisciplinary symposium. This forum focuses on the latest research and discussions in Byzantine and Medieval Studies before 1500, including the cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage in contemporary Europe.
This year's symposium is dedicated to Emperor Justinian I, bringing together scholars to explore Byzantium and the European Middle Ages, emphasizing their cultural and historical legacy as an integral part of Europe's diversities and commonalities.
We particularly encourage exploring Byzantium as an "internetwork"—a system of overlapping networks across space and time. Rather than focusing solely on cohesive factors like Roman law or religion, we'll consider the circulation of individuals (like educated young men moving between Constantinople and the provinces) as key to maintaining the Middle Byzantine Empire. This perspective invites questions such as:
How does Byzantine history appear when viewed as an actor-centered story of evolving networks?
How did the networks of the multipolar late antique empire transform as Constantinople became its central hub?
When and how did Middle Byzantine centripetal networks shift towards centrifugal ones, leading to imperial fragmentation and the resurgence of urban communities?
We welcome a wide range of broad themes, specific topics, and questions, including interdisciplinary contributions, that might apply concepts from social network analysis (SNA) to Byzantine and Medieval studies.
Key Dates:
